PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY



The night prior to the procedure (DATE/TIME:_________________):

Consume a CLEAR LIQUID dinner (examples of clear liquids: Jell-O, chicken or beef broth, water, apple juice, grape juice, gatorade)

After dinner drink HALF of the gallon container of liquid (Trilyte, Nulytely, Golytely). You may discard the remaining half.

Do not eat or drink after midnight. Medications may be taken with small sips of water.

The morning of the procedure(DATE/TIME:___________________):

Do not eat or drink anything.  However, necessary medications may be taken with a small sip of water.

Arrive at Eastside Endoscopy Center at __________________________.  The address is 1135 116th Ave NE, Suite 570, Bellevue, WA 98004. You do NOT need to bring a driver with you.

At your appointment sensors will be attached to your abdomen with adhesive pads (males may require some hair be shaved from your abdomen).  The sensors will be attached to a data recorder which is worn on a belt around your waist.  You will then be instructed to swallow the capsule.

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK FOR 2 HOURS after swallowing capsule

At _________________ you may drink water and/or clear liquids.

At _________________ you may have a light snack.

Return to Eastside Endoscopy Center at ________________.

After completion of the study, you may resume your normal diet.

WHILE UNDERGOING CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY:

DO contact your physician immediately if you have any abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting anytime after ingesting the capsule.

DO handle the data recorder, belt sensor array, and battery pack carefully.  Exposure to shock, vibration, or direct sunlight can result in a loss of information.

DO periodically (every 15 minutes or so) check to verify that the green light on top of the recorder is blinking.  If it stops for some reason, note the time and notify your physician.

DO record the time you eat or drink, and if you observe any unusual sensations. Record observations on sheet provided.  Bring these notes when you return for your follow up visit.

DON’T go near any source of powerful electromagnetic fields such as one created near an MRI device or amateur (ham) radio.

DON’T bend or stoop, or perform any rigorous exercise while undergoing capsule endoscopy.

DON’T shower, swim, or remove the belt ay any time during the examination.
